Hi Dr. Adams!

The ICD-9 code for a fractured tooth is 521.81

The CPT code used for extraction of a broken tooth is 41899: dentoalveolar procedure, unlisted. There is not a CPT code that is specific to the removal of a broken tooth like there is in CDT, so when using this non-specific medical code it would be a good idea to send along a narrative letter explaining the procedure.

Hope this helps!

What is the medical billing code to use for an extraction of D7140? Cross code says to use 41899, but then the ICD code gives examples of Turner's tooth and disturbances in eruption, when really the problem is a fractured tooth.
