Hi Guest!

D6100 - surgical removal of implant body
D7997 - appliance removal (not by dentist who placed appliance), includes removal of archbar

Dental coding is not our forte like medical coding for the dental practice setting is, however looking at full descriptions of D6100 and D7997, i don't believe they are interchangeable because D6100 indicate removal of implant body, while D7997 indicates appliance removal.

Medical coding (CPT) options for removal of implants include:

20670 - Removal of implant; superficial (eg, buried wire, pin or rod) (separate procedure)
20680 - Removal of implant; deep (eg, buried wire, pin, screw, metal band, nail, rod or plate)

Hope this helps!

A patient has been presented with a treatment plan to remove existing implants that were placed by a different provider - Her daughter called and informed our office that her insurance does not cover any implant services; however, it will cover D7000 codes. She's asking if we can re-code to help with insurance coverage.

My question: Can D6100 and D7997 be used interchangeably in this instance? We are FFS, but file on behalf of our patients, if that makes any difference.
