TwinMesh 2024 is the advanced meshing software based on many years of CFD simulation expertise for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of changing fluid volumes in the working chambers of rotary positive displacement (PD) machines.

High-quality hexahedral meshes are automatically generated for the moving parts of rotary positive displacement machines such as gear, lobe, cycloidal and vane pumps or screw and scroll compressors with a simple operation. It allows reliable CFD analysis of PD machines using all physics available in these CFD packages.

TwinMesh provides high-resolution and high-quality numerical meshes, avoids interpolation errors and allows the use of the full range of physics available in the major CFD solvers.

Structured meshes made with TwinMesh allow for reasonable transient CFD model sizes while ensuring the highest numerical quality.

New features in 2024
1. New model: Twin screw vacuum pump
Twin screw vacuum pumps consist of rotors with very sharp edges and high wrap angles that tend to increase towards the pressure side. In the TwinMesh 2024 version, some new features simplify the mesh generation process, allowing the generation of high-quality meshes suitable for twin screw vacuum pumps.
2. New post-smoothing type (TM2024)
The new smoothing type in TwinMesh 2024 is more versatile and suitable for rotors with axial gap meshes with sharp edges or thin blades.
It is able to generate high-quality meshes regardless of geometric complexity. Compared with the old type, the speed is increased by 30%.
3. Snap nodes on geometric curves when moving manually
Nodes can now snap to geometric curves, keeping the mesh more accurately representing the geometry.
5. Allow rotors to have the same direction of rotation
Some twin screw pumps use rotor profiles with the same direction of rotation. TwinMesh now supports this.
6. Automatic node distribution
Automatic node distribution keeps the nodes on the curve loop continuous, reducing the manual work of defining node distribution locally.
If not manually specified, the first element size of the connecting curve segments will be set to the same value.
This is very useful for vanes or rolling piston pumps, where the vanes disappear into the shaft,
while the length of the vane curve loop and the node distance decrease according to the rotational position.
7. Variable time step definition (angular step specified by table)
When using the spline interpolation function, it is now easier to set up simulations with variable time steps (angular steps). It allows the time step to be reduced according to the rotor position to handle scenarios where the high-pressure chamber is connected to the outlet volume and causes high flow rates. This feature is currently only available for Ansys CFX.
8. Oil or water injection
In recent years, TwinMesh and Ansys CFX have been able to simulate dry compressors. But liquids are usually used for sealing, cooling and lubrication. Unfortunately, compressors with oil or water injection are numerically very challenging: multiphase flow simulations must solve for the phase distribution (via additional transport equations for volume fractions), and local properties of the two-phase mixture, such as density or viscosity, can vary by several orders of magnitude in space and time. This makes the simulation less stable, more difficult to converge, and places higher demands on mesh quality. We have successfully met these requirements. A new tutorial describes how to mesh and set up a multiphase compressor simulation, computed using Ansys CFX with free surface simulation.
9. Multigrid postprocessing smoothing optimization

Fewer smoothing iterations means faster smoothing.

10. Monitor efficiency while the simulation is running

Volumetric and isentropic efficiencies for screw compressors are now available as monitoring features in the solver manager.

11. Mesh deformation method for reed valves

By pre-simulating the reed valve dynamics in Ansys Mechanical,

the rebound force and oscillation frequency over the tabulated reed valve opening amplitude are obtained.

Reed valve motion is included in the User Fortran column to obtain a simple but stable and efficient simulation setup, allowing multiple reed valves with different characteristics to be used in one simulation.
12. One-click mesh generation
All meshes can now be generated in one step, including exporting all files.
This is very useful for meshes that take more time to generate.
13. Display the lowest quality mesh section
The lowest quality mesh section function is now included at the top of the quality list.
14. Mesh quality analysis
TwinMesh 2024 greatly speeds up 3D quality calculations! To get the location of poor quality meshes, you can display them in the 3D view. The slice view shows the volume elements connecting two 2D mesh sections, which can be used to check the 3D mesh quality based on node displacements.
