Managing the need for pain relievers with the potential for adverse opioid side effects requires careful assessment and consultation with the pain management team. It needs to be discussed what pain levels were experienced, treatment goals, and side effects of taking pills. In particular, possible side effects of the drug must be discussed. What not to say to your pain management doctor is language like "opioids will do" or "I feel too much pain; give me anything.". It is better to discuss an approach, that is agreed upon by everybody, for pain management. Thus, by speaking to your doctor, you and your doctor will be able to consider all possible options to get rid of your pain, form rational views about the treatment, and build a pain treatment system that is not only effective but also safe for you.
