I am trying to send a medical claim for a young man who was seen in our dental office. He was beat up by several young men. Knocked out front tooth, could not save and ended up loosing the other front tooth due to fracture. I am using S00.502A for initial visit. Should I put on the initial visit claim more specific diagnosis codes such as S03.2XXA or Y04.2XXA?
Thank you, LK

Hi LK!
S00.502A stands for: Unspecified superficial injury of oral cavity, initial encounter S03.2XXA stands for: Dislocation of tooth, initial encounter Y04.2XXA stands for: Assault by strike against or bumped into by another person, initial encounter
Based on what you described below, S00.502A & S03.2XXA sound like they may be good codes for this situation. However, instead of Y04.2XXA, you may consider:
Y04.0XXA - Assault by unarmed brawl or fight, initial encounter Y04.8XXA - Assault by other bodily force, initial encounter
***if other means other than bodily force were used (i.e. blunt object, sharp object, weapon, etc - let me know and I can offer you some additional coding options)
You may also consider the following to describe the injury:
K08.411 - Partial loss of teeth due to trauma, class I K08.412 - Partial loss of teeth due to trauma, class II K08.413 - Partial loss of teeth due to trauma, class III K08.414 - Partial loss of teeth due to trauma, class IV K08.419 - Partial loss of teeth due to trauma, unspecified class K03.81 - Cracked tooth S02.5XXA - Fracture of tooth (traumatic), initial encounter for closed fracture S02.5XXB - Fracture of tooth (traumatic), initial encounter for open fracture
Hope this helps!
