What is the difference between CPT codes 00170 and 99148 and when are they used? We need to bill out IV Sedation for a patient. We hired an outside anesthesiologist to monitor and administer the medications but our doctor performed the surgery. I'm very confused as the code 00170 states Anesthesia for procedures in the mouth but is that used when the same doctor administers the sedation? HELP!!!!!!

Hi 8701CAMINO! Great question! 00170 = Anesthesia for intraoral procedures, including biopsy; not otherwise specified 99148-99150 = Moderate sedation services (other than those services described by codes 00100-01999) provided by a physician other than the health care professional performing the diagnostic or therapeutic service that the sedation supports [includes codes 99148, 99149, 99150] So basically....the 00170 should only be used when there isn't another code that directly describes the service, due to the language in the description: "not otherwise specified" But, you may look into the modifier "AA" to signify the service done by the anesthesiologist, the description of this modifier is: AA = Anesthesia services personally performed by the anesthesiologist Here is a link to a sample medical policy from Empire Blue that does a good job of outlining the criteria: http://www.empireblue.com/medicalpolicies/guidelines/gl_pw_c159214.htm Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any further questions!

This is 2017... I am billing 00170 and 99199 for an anesthesiologist who performed the services. Is this the best way?

Hi guest!
00170 stands for: Anesthesia for intraoral procedures, including biopsy; not otherwise specified
99199 stands for: Unlisted special service, procedure or report
Do you know what service 99199 is being used to represent, as it is an "unlisted" code requiring a report?
