Hi Dr. Teller! Two questions for you:

1) Do you know what caused the pain? (i.e. car accident, blow to the head, fall, prolonged opening of the mouth, wisdom teeth surgery procedure, general anesthesia), and

2) What symptoms are present? (i.e. temporo-mandibular joint and temporal pain, ear and mandibular pain, posterior tooth sensitivity, eye pain, and throat pain (especially when swallowing)

The injury was probably caused by a fall with a blow to the left side of her jaw. She has pain in the stylomandibular ligament and has many of the symptoms of Ernest syndrome ie, referred pain to the mandibular teeth, pain on swallowing.

Dr. Teller -

Here are some ICD-9 code options, depending on the patient's specific issues....

728.0-728.9: Disorders of muscle, ligament, and facsia
784.1: Throat pain
733.99: Other disorders of bone and cartilage
784.92: Jaw pain

....and some options for the injury code side of it:

E929.3: late effects of accidental fall
E886.8: fall, same level
E885: fall on same level, slipping, tripping, stumbling

E880.9: fall on or from other stairs or steps
E889.9: fall into other hole or other opening in surface
