If we are using the company NPI for billing insurance, should the company be entered as the default provider

Hi drT!

Great question. In the provider set up, the doctor's name and personal NPI should be entered in the "general" tab. In the "insurance defaults" tab, you will find a spot to enter the details for box 32 (service facility info) and box 33 (billing provider info). The company NPI can be entered into these two boxes. Then, to indicate yourself as the "rendering" provider for the services, you will scroll down to the bottom of the insurance defaults tab and enter your personal NPI number into the box labeled "Rendering Provider ID#".

Hope this helps, please feel free to contact us with any further questions!

Hi,

I'm in the process of setting up a new office and only have a corporate NPI. From what I've read, that's all that is necessary. Based on reading your reply here, do I need to set up a new personal NPI as well?

Thank you,

Dr. O

Hi Dr. O!

Great question. Yes it is recommended that you register for a personal NPI if you do not already have one, as insurers prefer the use of your personal NPI to indicate the "rendering provider" with an NPI rather than a social security number.

You can search to see if you already have a personal NPI at the NPI registry search using your first name, last name, and state if necessary:
https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/NPPESRegistry/NPIRegistrySearch.do?subAction=reset&searchType=ind

You can also register for a personal NPI online! Here is a link where you can do so:
https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/NPPES/Welcome.do

You of course can use your corporate NPI for your billing information in Box 33 of the CMS 1500 claim form.

Hope this helps, please let us know if you have any further questions!
